Gunshot victim sparks security alert at Opelika primary school

A school in Opelika, Ala., was placed on a heightened level of security today after a gunshot victim was found in a yard at 518 N. Antioch Circle, police said.

The 30-year-old man was airlifted to the Midtown Medical Center in Columbus after the 12:15 CST shooting . He was treated for gunshot wounds but his condition was unavailable.

Police said Carver Primary School was placed on a heightened level of security because it was in close proximity to the neighborhood where the shooting occurred. Police said initially a potential suspect may have been in the area. The school returned to normal activities after authorities determined the area was safe.

  Police found the victim after checking a shots fired report in the 500 block of North Antioch Circle.  Officers later learned the scene of the shooting was on the other side of the circle in front of the 548 building.

  The victim had been occupying a white van before several shots were fired into the vehicle.
