A murder suspect from Rockford, Ill., was captured Friday on 30th Avenue in Columbus, said Lamont Ruffin, public affairs officer for the U.S. Marshals Service in Columbus.
Dashon Ward, 33, was taken into custody without incident at 10:30 a.m. He was taken to the Muscogee County Jail where he is charged with one count of first degree murder and armed habitual criminal. He will remain in Columbus until he is extradited to Illinois.
Ward is accused of fatally shooting Jason DePena after an argument. He had been on the lam from the Rockford Police Department when the department requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals.
The marshals developed information that Ward had possibly fled to the Columbus area. That information led to his arrest in the 30th Avenue block in Columbus.
The U.S. Marshals were assisted by Task Force Officers and Muscogee County sheriff’s deputies. Other agencies include the U.S. Marshals South-East Regional Fugitive Task Force – Macon Division; Gulf-Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force – Phenix City Division and Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office.
