Man dies of gunshot days after assault
Five days after he was shot, Jherett Jones died on March 18 from a gunshot wound in the parking lot of the Heap Cheap convenience store in Phenix City, authorities said today.
Jones, 19, was taken by private vehicle to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus after the shooting.
Police were called to check on shots fired in the Fontaine Road and Sixth Place South area when the shooting scene was found in the parking lot.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Phenix City Police Department Criminal Investigation Division.
The funeral for Jones will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pine Hill Baptist Church in Phenix City where the Rev. J.C. Fryer is pastor and Rev. Anthony Smith is officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Phenix City, according to Taylor Funeral Home Inc.
Known as "Bock", Jones was a 2015 graduate of Central High School.
