Police: Inmate recaptured after escaping from work detail in Opelika
Authorities with the United States Marshals Office recaptured on Wednesday the inmate who allegedly fled from work detail Monday afternoon at the Opelika Police Department, according to Phenix City police.
Edwin D. Dennis, who was wanted on a second-degree escape charge, was apprehended by the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force at an abandoned camp site on Lake Martin in Tallapoosa County. He was taken to the Tallapoosa County Sheriff Department to await transport to the Opelika Police Department, Phenix City Police Department announced around 8 p.m. Wednesday on its Facebook page.
Opelika police said Dennis, 43, of Valley was working as a trustee when he fled in a white Chevrolet Lumina at 12:30 p.m. Monday. At the time, authorities suspected that Dennis had shed his orange jumpsuit to wear a white t-shirt and blue pants.
