A 32-year-old man accused of imprisoning and raping a woman in a Columbus residence near Talbotton Road told the court Wednesday morning it “was all a misunderstanding.”
Perseus Thyaharj Givens of Columbus, also known as Perseus Williams, pleaded not guilty in Columbus Recorder’s Court to simple battery and false imprisonment charges stemming from the incident that authorities said left the victim with neck pain and faint bruises on her forearms. He could potentially face additional charges related to the case, which was forwarded to the Columbus Police Department’s Sex Crimes Division.
Officer David Webb said the victim called 911 around 8:46 a.m. Saturday to report that a man she knew was holding her against her will in a home less than a mile away from Talbotton Road. She yelled that he was coming back before hanging up the phone.
When 911 dispatch called back, Givens answered the phone and said the woman had left, but the operator could hear the woman screaming in the background, Webb testified.
Officers obtained the address where the call was made but wasn’t able to locate the victim or suspect at the residence upon arrival.
Authorities were called around 10:22 a.m. to meet the victim.
She told the responding officers that she sleeping in the bedroom of the residence when Givens woke her up around 8 a.m. and told her “it was time,” meaning it was time for sex.
She told him twice that she didn’t want to have sex, but he told her they were “having it” before removing her clothing, according to police. A struggle then ensued.
Givens then told her they were “supposed to be together,” attempted to blindfold her with a pink scarf and pinned her to the bed, she reported.
“She stated that at this time, he tried to force her to give him oral sex and again tried to blindfold her,” Webb said. “During the struggle, she scratched his arms several times and bit him on his upper left arm.”
The defendant allegedly raped the woman before she got away from him and ran to the door, but he refused to return her clothes. He then grabbed her and threw her against the bed, where they continued to struggle, police stated.
“She stated this roughly happened three times, where she would get away from him and he drag her back to the bed and throw her down,” Webb said. “She said that the last time she got away from him, he told her just to leave the house naked.”
The victim grabbed her keys and went outside naked, but he wouldn’t let her get into her vehicle. She attempted to walk up the street, and he told her to get inside and get dressed for church.
She was inside the residence retrieving her clothes when he took her keys and went outside to her car, giving her an opportunity to call 911.
Police said the defendant had visible scratches and a bite mark on his arm when they took him into custody at noon Saturday. He denied keeping her against her will but stated that he attempted to force her to perform oral sex Friday night, Webb testified.
Givens told the court it was all a “misunderstanding” and he was sorry if he “scared her in any type of way.”
“I just want to apologize for my behavior,” Givens said. “I’m not trying to make her feel like the bad person or me the bad person.”
Judge Michael Cielinski ordered Givens be held in the Muscogee County Jail under bonds totaling $21,000 and bound the case over to Superior Court.
