Man admits cutting woman more than 10 times, robbing her
A mentally ill man who last year slashed a Columbus woman more than 10 times with a 14-inch kitchen knife to make her give him the key to her locked bedroom pleaded guilty Friday.
Police called to Fletcher Avenue at 8:58 p.m. Sept. 11 found the 52-year-old woman lying in a pool of blood in her living room. Before losing consciousness, she told officers Corey Ingram cut her until she gave him the key to her bedroom, where she kept her money.
The victim said she had given Ingram $5 to buy her some hair dye, and when he returned, he took a knife from her kitchen, slashed her on her arms, face and upper torso, and with the key took $140 from her bedroom.
Police hunting for Ingram found him stripped to his underwear, burning his bloody clothes. They chased him to a residence on Garden Drive, and used a Taser on him when he tried to snatch gear from an officer’s belt during a struggle.
In court Friday, Ingram, 37, pleaded guilty to armed robbery, aggravated assault and obstructing police. Judge Gil McBride sentenced him to 18 years in prison and 12 years’ probation. The judge also ordered Ingram to undergo counseling for anger management, and to have no further contact with the victim.
Attorneys said Ingram has a mental illness, and had quit taking his medication before the assault and robbery.
