Authorities are still investigating the death of a man whose body was found Friday night behind the Crooked Creek Shopping Center in Opelika, authorities said Monday morning in a press release.
Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said the body is currently undergoing an autopsy at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery. Officials are still trying to determined his identity and cause of death.
Opeilka Police Capt. Shane Healey said Opelika’s police and fire department responded to the area behind Crooked Creek Shopping Center at 710 Columbus Parkway, where the man was seen lying behind the businesses unresponsive.
Deputy Lee County Coroner Gene Manning arrived on the scene later and pronounced him dead at 8:56 p.m. CST. There are suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and the case is being as a possible homicide, police said.
“The investigation is ongoing and in its early stages,” Healey said Saturday. “We will not be releasing any further details at this time so as to protect the integrity of this investigation.”
