Official: Second escaped inmate recaptured in Greenville, Ga.
Eugene Lamar Mitchell, one of two inmates who escaped from the Meriwether County Jail on Friday evening, was recaptured around 5 p.m. Sunday in Greenville, Ga., according to a press release.
Officials said Mitchell, who fled from his cell block around 7:30 p.m. Friday along with Travion Hall, was apprehended 2018 Freeman St. in Apt.115. The agencies who assisted in his arrest included the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshal’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, Georgia Department of Community Supervision and the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit has captured the remaining Escapee Eugene Lamar Mitchell.
“We had received information that Mitchell may possibly be occupying an older model, white in color, Dodge Caravan,” said Meriwether Sheriff Chuck Smith. “Additional information was that Mitchell was reported to be at an apartment located off of Freeman Street.”
A covert surveillance operation of the area indicated that the vehicle matching the description that Mitchell had been occupying was at 2018 Freeman St. at Apt. 115, which officials identified as his apartment.
“We made entry into this apartment and Mitchell was found hiding in a back bedroom of this residence,” Smith stated in the release. “Mitchell was taken into custody without further incident.”
Mitchell was transported to the Meriwether County Jail, where he underwent booking procedures for the offenses of escape and interference with government property with additional charges pending. He will be housed at another jail facility without bond.
Mitchell’s arrest came days after Hall was recaptured at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at Garden Inn & Suites in Room 108 in Hogansville, Ga.
“We are continuing our investigation into this matter related to this case investigation,” Smith said. “I appreciate the assistance of all the agencies involved in tracking down both of these wanted fugitives and getting them back in custody.”
