Opelika man faces attempted murder charge after shooting near Pleasant Circle

The Opelika man accused of firing shots Thursday during an armed robbery in the area of Pleasant Drive was arrested on Monday afternoon, according to a press release from the Opelika Police Department

Demarcus Lamar Benford, the 28-year-old suspect, was taken into custody around 2:22 p.m. in the 300 block of Pleasant Circle. He faces attempted murder, first-degree robbery and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling charges related to the incident, which ended without injury.

Authorities said they issued warrants for Benford the same day he robbed a 30-year-old man at gunpoint in the area Pleasant Drive, stealing his cellphone and cash.

“During the robbery, the suspect shot at the victim multiple times, striking the victim’s vehicle and two occupied residences in the area,” Police Capt. Shane Healey said in the press release.
