Police: Driver flees scene after striking 7-year-old cyclist

Columbus police said it is seeking the female driver who fled the scene after striking a 7-year-old boy while he was riding his bicycle Saturday evening in the 2800 block of Schaul Street.

The Columbus boy was treated at the Midtown Medical Center for superficial injuries to the left side of his head and released.

According to a police report, a witness said the boy was crossing Schaul Street on his bicycle, traveling north toward a front yard in the 2800 block, when he ran into an apparent blue Ford Focus traveling east on Schaul Street.

The driver got out to check on the pedestrian and then said she would follow the boy’s family as they transported him to the hospital. The woman left the scene but didn’t go to the hospital.

A witness described the driver was described as a 5-foot-7 tall black woman who has short hair and appears to weigh about 200 pounds. She was traveling with a young black woman in the passenger seat at the time of the incident, according to the report.
