Muscogee County Sheriff’s deputy arrested Monday on battery charge
A Muscogee County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested Monday morning on an outstanding warrant for one misdemeanor count of battery with physical harm, Sheriff John Darr confirmed.
Mark Edward Whaley, 36, of Columbus was apprehended at the Public Safety Building at 11:02 a.m. Monday in relation to a reported incident that occurred when he was working with the Columbus Police Department. He was booked into the Muscogee County Jail but released on a $1,000 bond by Tuesday morning.
His bond was forfeited and his was bound over to State Court.
Whaley worked for the Columbus Police Department for at least five years before he transferred to the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as a deputy working in the jail.
Darr said he wasn’t aware of the incident at the time. Police have yet to release further details concerning the situation.
Whaley was placed unpaid administrative leave, which the sheriff said is standard procedure for any employee who has been charged.
