Police: Man faces child cruelty charge after whipping child

A 49-year-old man was charged with first-degree child cruelty after he allegedly “whipped” a boy and “grabbed him by his neck,” according to an arrest report from the Columbus Police Department.

Dwayne Gates of Columbus was taken into custody at 12 a.m. Wednesday in connection with the incident. He was transported to the Muscogee County Jail under a $5,000 bond.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. today in Columbus Recorder’s Court.

Authorities have yet to release the current condition of the boy who they said sustained “several large welts and cuts” as a result of the reported attack.
