Possibly armed man flees crash in downtown Columbus
Columbus and Phenix City police are on the scene of a wreck at the intersection of 13th Street and Broadway in Columbus shortly after 1:15 p.m. Thursday.
An official confirmed that police are searching for a man who fled the scene of the crash. The suspect is possibly armed with a gun and the man was believed to be Hispanic wearing a brown shirt, said Columbus Police Maj. J.D. Hawk.
By 1:58 p.m., police were seen seizing a hangun from the brown GMC 1500 the suspect was seen traveling at the time of the collision.
Jim Clark, the driver and only occupant in the other vehicle, said he was traveling in a gray Ford F-250, heading down 13th Street, preparing to take a left on Broadway when he heard squealing brakes from another truck.
Clark was passing through the intersection when he said he saw the driver coming towards him at a high speed. The two vehicles collided, leaving each with damage to its front end.
“When I kind of got my senses about me, I looked up and saw somebody running,” Clark said. “He jumped out of his vehicle, running, and sometime after that I saw Phenix City police come up.”
Clark said he was checked out by medics on the scene but plans to get more medical attention later today.
