Police: Suspect in 17th Avenue homicide turns himself in

The 30-year-old man wanted in connection with Saturday night’s fatal shooting on 17th Avenue surrendered to authorities Tuesday afternoon, Columbus police said.

Torrance Terrell Menefee was accompanied by his defense attorney Stacey Jackson when he turned himself in to officials at the Public Safety building at 2:03 p.m. He was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and booked into the Muscogee County Jail.

Menefee’s preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Friday in Columbus Recorder’s Court.

Authorities were responding to a shooting at 406 17th Ave. around 10:15 p.m. when they found 25-year-old Kenneth Holloway Jr. lying dead in the street with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m., Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said.

Warrants were issued for Menefee by 3 a.m. the next morning. Police have yet to give a motive behind the shooting.

Holloway’s death is the 12th homicide of the year in Columbus. It comes days after Demonde Donya Dicks Jr., 24, was found shot to death at Double Churches Park near the basketball court. Jacquawn Clark, 19, and Akeveius Powell, 21, have been arrested and charged with the murder. Officials are still searching for 25-year-old Derain Waller, the third suspect in the Double Churches Park shooting.
