Teen surrenders to police in death of girl, 16, at Wilson Homes

The teen accused in the Friday shooting death of 16-year-old Lekeshia Moses at Wilson Homes surrendered to authorities at the Public Safety Center, attorney Mark Shelnutt said Saturday.

Shelnutt accompanied Lernard Bonner, 17, when he turned himself in around 3:30 p.m. Bonner made no statements to police before he was booked into the Muscogee County Jail on a murder charge. He is held without bond for an 8 a.m. Tuesday hearing in Columbus Recorder’s Court.

Police Lt. Greg Touchberry said Bonner turned himself in without incident.

Bonner had been acquainted with Moses for a long time before the 9:45 a.m. Friday shooting inside Building 107-D at 3400 Eighth Ave., Shelnutt said. Moses, who sustained a gunshot to the face, was transported to Midtown Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 10:57 a.m.

Police have not disclosed a motive in connection with the shooting. A number of people were inside the apartment at the time.

Touchberry said witnesses in the apartment during the incident have been fully cooperative with police. Investigators have been at multiple locations in Columbus questioning other people who might have information.

Anyone with additional information on the shooting should contact Sgt. Randy Long at 706-225-4260 or 706-653-3400.

Moses’ death is the 13th homicide in Columbus this year. It came less than two weeks after the June 18 shooting death of Kenneth Holloway Jr., 25, in the 400 block of 17th Avenue off of Cusseta Road.
