Phenix City Schools calendar for next 2 years proposed; here are key dates
The Phenix City Board of Education is scheduled to vote Thursday on the system’s calendars for the next two school years. So if the board approves the recommendation superintendent Randy Wilkes made during Tuesday night’s work session, here are the key dates:
In the 2018-19 school year, the first day of classes would be Aug. 7, and the last day would be May 23. Students would be off Sept. 3 for Labor Day, Oct. 5-8 (Friday-Monday) for fall break, Nov. 12 for Veterans Day, Nov. 19-23 for Thanksgiving break, Dec. 19 through Jan. 2 for Christmas break, Jan. 14 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Feb. 18 for Presidents Day, March 25-29 for spring break and April 19 for Good Friday.
In the 2019-20 school year, the first day of classes would be Aug. 6, and the last day would be May 21. Students would be off Sept. 2 for Labor Day, Oct. 11-14 (Friday-Monday) for fall break, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day, Nov. 25-29 for Thanksgiving break, Dec. 23 through Jan. 6 for Christmas break, Jan. 13 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Feb. 17 for Presidents Day, March 23-27 for spring break and April 10 for Good Friday.
Wilkes told the board 75 percent of the approximately 1,000 respondents to an online survey favored these calendar options. The significant differences between this school year’s calendar and the proposed calendars for the next two years are:
▪ Adding the Friday off before the Columbus Day holiday on a Monday to provide a four-day weekend for a fall break.
▪ Adding an off day for Good Friday.
▪ Decreasing the number of school days off for students during Christmas break from 13 to 11.
▪ Moving spring break to the fourth full week of March instead of the third full week of March.
