You’ll hear gunfire from MCSD property in January emergency drill. Here are the details.

The Muscogee County School District and Columbus first responders plan to conduct an emergency drill next month to practice reuniting parents with their children.

MCSD communications director Mercedes Parham told the Ledger-Enquirer she couldn’t specify the time and location, but she did say the drill will be conducted at a school district property during the afternoon of Jan. 7, the day before students return to school after Christmas break.

The drill will include a convoy of law enforcement vehicles and gunfire with blanks.

“It’s a full exercise to help us prepare in case we have an event where we have to relocate students and reunify them with their parents or legal guardians at another site,” she said.

Asked whether children will be involved in the drill, Parham said, “We will have people that will be acting, so there will be some volunteers.”

MCSD will release a public service announcement later this week with more details, Parham said.

“Our biggest concern at this point is making sure the public knows that it’s a drill,” she said.
