Why MCSD cabinet member in charge of $300 million budget is leaving her position

Muscogee County School District superintendent David Lewis is looking for a new cabinet member.

MCSD chief financial officer Theresa Thornton is retiring from the system. After five years in the position, her last day working in the district will be Jan. 16.

Thornton told the Ledger-Enquirer she will be finance director at the Georgia Department of Public Health. The new job will enable her to be closer to family, she said.

Thornton said she is proud of the accolades the finance division has received, continuing the legacy her predecessors set, as the staff manages the district’s annual budget of approximately $300 million.

“Some of those achievements help us in our bond rating and how we’re viewed by investors,” she said.

Lewis told the L-E, “Ms. Thornton was dedicated to implementing the best practices in education budget reporting.”

Janice Bloodworth, MCSD’s senior director of fiscal management and planning, will lead the finance division until Thornton’s successor is hired, Lewis said.
