Find out if your Columbus area school ‘Beat the Odds’ or is ‘Below Expected Range’
The number of Columbus public schools “Beating the Odds” has increased during the past year.
“Beating the Odds” is a statistical analysis by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement that compares a school’s scores on the state report card, called the College and Career Ready Performance Index, with the CCRPI of schools that have similar characteristics in Georgia.
Schools that produce higher CCRPI scores than similar schools receive the “Beating the Odds” designation, meaning they perform better than expected.
In 2019, 23 of the Muscogee County School District’s 54 schools received the “Beating the Odds” designation, meaning they performed better than expected because they produced higher CCRPI scores than schools comparable in size, demographics and other factors.
That’s three more “Beating the Odds” schools in MCSD compared to the 20 in 2018.
But also comparing 2019 to 2018, MCSD has three more “Below Expected Range” schools, meaning 15 schools have CCRPI scores worse than their characteristics would predict.
The rest of MCSD’s schools, 16 of them, received the “Within Expected Range” designation for 2019, meaning their CCRPI scores were around what would be predicted based on their characteristics.
CALCULATION FACTORS
GOSA includes the following school characteristics in its “Beating the Odds” calculation:
- Percentage of economically disadvantaged students.
- Percentage of English language learners.
- Percentage of students with disabilities.
- Percentage of students in each race/ethnicity.
- Percentage of female students.
- Student mobility.
- School size.
- Whether a school is defined as non-traditional.
- School type (elementary, middle, high and schools that span grade clusters).
Compared to the three other school districts in Georgia’s second-tier cities, MCSD is ahead. It is first in highest percentage of “Beating the Odds” schools (43%) and first in lowest percentage of “Below Expected Range” schools (28%).
Out of the 35 public schools in Bibb County (Macon), 10 are “Beating the Odds” (29%) and 11 are “Below Expected Range” (31%).
Out of the 56 public schools in Chatham County (Savannah), 12 are “Beating the Odds” (21%) and 21 are “Below Expected Range” (38%).
