Ledger-Enquirer’s Page One Awards moving online due to coronavirus. What you need to know

Due to the coronavirus, or COVID-19 pandemic, the Ledger-Enquirer will not have a Page One Awards ceremony in the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts and instead present the event in a new format.

The 2020 edition of this 45th annual event, celebrating outstanding high school students and teachers in the Columbus area, will be online only.

The winners of these scholarships and awards will be announced April 21 at 7 p.m. in a story and video at ledger-enquirer.com. Here’s the page (it won’t work until we get closer to the program).

Last year, the L-E gave the winners and runners-up in the 13 student categories and one teacher category a total of $19,000 in awards, bringing the 44-year total to $610,000 for more than 8,600 students and teachers.

The student categories are art, athletics, career and technology, citizenship, drama, English and literature, foreign language, general scholarship, journalism, mathematics, music, science and social studies.

The Page One Award candidates are nominated by high school principals throughout the Chattahoochee Valley. After reading the applications, which include essay questions and a faculty recommendation, the judges interview the nominees.

The judges, comprising more than 50 community leaders this year, also consider the nominee’s academic achievements and community service to select the winners and runners-up.
