Here’s how kids can experience Columbus Museum art, history from home

The Columbus Museum is donating nearly 5,000 free activity books to local school districts to help students connect with art and history during the coronavirus pandemic.

The “Museum from Home” activity booklets are being distributed through the meals-to-go programs in both the Muscogee County and Phenix City school districts. The Phenix City School District received 1,500 booklets and the Muscogee County School District received 2,900 booklets.

“We wanted to make these to reach children in our community who might not have internet access to get our virtual museum offerings from our web page,” said Lucy Kacir, the museum’s director of education and engagement.

The activities inside each book are based on the museum’s collection, she said. For example, there’s a drawing activity encouraging kids to design their own pot based on Muscogee Creek Pottery.

“We wanted to give them something that might bring a little bit of that joy back into their lives, and that excitement, and give them a chance to practice some of those writing and creative thinking skills that will be so critical when they go back to school,” Kacir said.

Kacir said the project was made possible through donations from Communicorp and private donors.

The Columbus Museum has also launched a virtual museum and virtual museum for kids to connect people with their resources during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The museum closed to the public March 14. Reopening to the public will be based on guidance from local and state officials.
