Harris County High School will hold in-person graduation ceremonies this weekend

Harris County High School will conduct two in-person graduation ceremonies Saturday by splitting its Class of 2020 in half to better accommodate social-distancing guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Despite being met with obstacle after obstacle, our planning team has continued to pursue and plan ways to celebrate our graduating class,” HCHS principal Tyler Dunn said in a news release. “After consulting with the Department of Public Health and yielding to some of their recommendations, we are glad to have a graduation plan. This will take great coordination and can only happen with the cooperation of all involved: students, family members, and faculty and staff.”

Both ceremonies, on Durham Field at the school, will be ticketed events. The ceremony for students with last names beginning with A-L will start at 8 a.m., followed by M-Z at 10 a.m.

They will practice Friday, at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., when each student will receive four tickets for their guests.

“Spectators will be responsible for maintaining appropriate social distancing,” the news release says.

Later this week, details will be available at the @HCHSga social media channels regarding live streaming of the ceremonies.

Out of the class’ 394 members, approximately 320 are expected to participate in the ceremonies, school district spokeswoman Rachel Crumbley told the Ledger-Enquirer.

Asked whether masks will be required, Crumbley wrote in an email to the L-E, “Per the Governor’s Office, masks aren’t required. But, they are recommended, especially for anyone unable to socially distance.”
