90 people quarantined from two COVID-19 cases in this Columbus-area school district

A minor outbreak of coronavirus in a Columbus area school district this week shows that only a few cases can affect dozens of people and cause major disruptions.

Manchester High School announced Wednesday night on its Facebook page that contact tracing after two Manchester Middle School students tested positive for COVID-19 resulted in the quarantine of 90 people in the Meriwether County School System:

  • 44 MMS students
  • 32 Mountain View Elementary School students
  • 7 MMS teachers
  • 4 MHS students
  • 3 bus drivers.

COVID-19 also initially postponed Manchester’s football game at Chattahoochee County, but tonight’s game is expected to be played as scheduled.

Meriwether superintendent Robert Griffin announced Wednesday night on the district’s Facebook page that the Oct. 2 game “will be postponed due to COVID related matters.”

Thursday evening, however, Griffin announced in another Facebook post that further consultation with Georgia Department of Public Health officials “confirmed that proper quarantining occurred in Chattahoochee County regarding COVID positive case(s) on their football team. … I feel confident, based on this updated information I received, that we are safe to proceed with the football game as scheduled on Friday.”
