Principal updates condition of student who jumped from 2nd floor at Smiths Station High
The 16-year-old boy who jumped Monday from the second-floor mezzanine in Smiths Station High School has been released from the hospital.
“I spoke with his mother yesterday,” SSHS principal Brad Cook told the Ledger-Enquirer in an email Thursday. “The student is recovering well at home. We will continue to work closely with the family to take care of his educational needs while he is away.”
The student had a head injury but was conscious when an ambulance took him to a Columbus hospital, Cook previously told the L-E.
In that Tuesday interview, Cook explained what he had learned about the incident.
While classes were being conducted, an assistant principal and two teachers tried to calm down the student who was dealing with an unspecified issue on the second floor, Cook said. The student climbed over the safety railing and jumped without warning, Cook said.
“Nobody had any inclination that he was going to jump,” Cook said then. “He didn’t make any threat. … We’re doing some investigating and trying to figure out what those issues were leading up to it.”
When asked Thursday whether he had more information on what happened and why, Cook said, “I cannot get into details at this time.”
