The Muscogee County School District is changing its mask policy.

Masks will be optional but recommended in MCSD buildings beginning Feb. 14, the district announced Friday.

Under federal mandates, masks still are required on school buses.

“The district will continue enhanced cleaning protocols, promotion of handwashing and proper hygiene, physical distancing when possible and illness protocols,” the news release said. “In addition, the district will continue to monitor and be responsive to local data and conditions in schools and the community, adjusting as warranted and recommended by the medical experts.”

Another MCSD news release Friday shows the district’s number of reported coronavirus cases declined for the second straight week.

From Jan. 31-Feb. 4, MCSD had 131 reported COVID cases (94 students, 37 employees), compared to 188 (139 students, 49 employees) from Jan. 24-28.

MCSD’s highest number of weekly reported cases this school year was 276 (206 students, 70 employees) from Jan. 18-21. The district was closed Jan. 17 for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The lowest level of reported cases this school year in MCSD was Nov. 8-10, when nine (four students, five employees) were reported. Students were off one day that week for Veterans Day.

MCSD has 30,849 students and 5,175 employees, including 3,636 based in a school.
