Gunfire injures student at Columbus middle school
A student was injured by gunfire Thursday at a Columbus middle school.
Muscogee County School District communications director Kimberly Wright emailed the following news release after the Ledger-Enquirer asked officials for an explanation of a social media post about the incident:
“This afternoon, we received a report of an incident on the campus of Rothschild Leadership Academy.
“A loaded firearm, concealed in a Chromebook case, was unintentionally discharged, resulting in one of our learners being injured. The student impacted received immediate medical attention. No other injuries were reported.
“The students and staff of Rothschild Leadership Academy are safe. The weapon has been confiscated, and the investigation is ongoing. Parents have been notified. No other details are available at this time.”
Columbus Police Department public information officer Brittany Santiago told the Ledger-Enquirer in an email, “Our officers were there to assist with an incident that happened at the school. MCSD Police is handling the investigation. Any further questions should be directed to the school district’s spokesperson.”
The Ledger-Enquirer asked Wright for information about the student’s injury, whether the student was hospitalized, whether the injured student is the same person who had the concealed gun and where at the school did the gun discharge.
“We will update you as soon as we know more,” she said in an email.
