Troup may merge elementary schools

In its proposed  Fiscal Year 2012 Budget, the Troup County School District has made the recommendation to merge two elementary schools.

Cannon Street Elementary and Mountville Elementary each currently serve about 250 students. The average size of the remaining elementary schools in the system is more than 450.

The Troup County School District says that by combining the two schools, staffing efficiencies would allow for 21 fewer employees and save the system $1.1 million.

The recommendation calls for all Cannon Street Elementary school students to move to Mountville Elementary next year. That might not please Cannon parents but their school building isn't big enough to handle the merger.

Public hearings will be held.
