No more warnings. Speeding fines will be enforced in these Muscogee school zones
The warning period has ended for school speed zones in Columbus.
Starting on Aug. 4, when classes begin in the Muscogee County School District for the 2025-26 academic year, citations will be issued after motorists are caught on camera speeding through the safety zone of some Columbus public schools.
MCSD’s School Zone Safety Program, launched last year, is a partnership with the Columbus Police Department and Illinois-based RedSpeed USA, which provides automated photo enforcement of speed monitoring.
Based on data determining the zones with a history of the most speeding violations in the district, the partnership selected 21 of MCSD’s 54 schools to pilot the program, CPD Cpl. Aaron Hoffa, the program’s coordinator, told the Ledger-Enquirer last year.
The program was phased in last school year. Warnings were issued for a while, but now all speeders in all of the program’s school zones will be subject to fines, CPD announced.
Cameras are active starting one hour before each school day begins until one hour after classes end. Owners of vehicles traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit will be mailed a ticket. Fines cost $80 for the first violation and $130 for each additional violation.
