Harris County School District superintendent explains why he’s retiring
Harris County School District superintendent Justin Finney plans to retire at the end of this school year.
HCSD announced Finney’s pending retirement in a news release Friday. He is scheduled to retired May 31, 2026.
Finney said in the news release this decision came “after much reflection and with a heart full of gratitude.”
“Serving the students, staff and families of Harris County has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said. “I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished together. In recent months, I have come to recognize the importance of prioritizing my health and family responsibilities, and I believe this is the right time for me, my family and the district..”
Finney has worked for 30 years in public education, including nearly 20 in HCSD.
The HCSD board promoted Finney to superintendent in 2024, when Roger Couch retired. Finney’s other positions in HCSD have been three years as assistant principal at Harris County Carver Middle School, eight years as principal of Mulberry Creek Elementary School and six years as assistant superintendent.
Finney’s successor hasn’t been announced.
“The Harris County Board of Education will begin the transition process in preparation for the 2026–2027 school year,” the news release says.
