A Phenix City educator is a semifinalist for the 2026-27 Alabama Teacher of the Year award.

Kelly Sasser, who teaches math at Central High School, is among the 16 semifinalists out of the 155 candidates from across the state.

“I never expected to advance to the next round, which makes this recognition especially humbling,” Sasser said in a news release from Phenix City Schools. “I strive to teach in a way that helps students see the relevance of what they are learning and how it connects to their lives.

“I want math to feel meaningful, useful and even enjoyable. Knowing that the time, energy and heart I invest in my students is being recognized is incredibly meaningful.”

Making this recognition especially meaningful for Sasser is that it comes while she teaches at her alma mater.

“As a senior at Central High, she faced life-altering challenges and found a lifeline in a teacher who refused to let her slip through the cracks,” the news release said.

“That experience continues to inspire me to be that same source of encouragement and support for my students,” Sasser said. “I am also inspired daily by my children, both my own and the students I teach. Watching my three children pursue their goals reminds me how powerful encouragement, perseverance and belief can be. Their journeys motivate me to help my students believe in themselves and confidently work toward their dreams.”

Sasser tries to empower her students to succeed.

“I want my students to dream big, make a plan and take action,” she said. “I hope they leave my classroom knowing that with hard work, perseverance and the right support, they can create opportunities for themselves and make their dreams happen. I strive to be someone who encourages them and helps connect them to the opportunities that can open doors for their future.”

After the semifinalists are narrowed to four finalists, the Alabama State Board of Education is scheduled to announce the winner in May. The Alabama Teacher of the Year serves as an ambassador for the teaching profession and represents the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

“Phenix City Schools invites the entire community to celebrate Mrs. Sasser for her dedication, her heart and the light she continues to shine on the students of Central High School,” the news release says.
