Vanessa Jackson announces for Muscogee County School Board

Vanessa Jackson says it is imperative that improvement be made at the elementary school level.

“We have too many failing schools. Most children who get behind in elementary school never recover, ” she said on Monday when announcing her candidacy to represent District 3 on the Muscogee County School Board.

The 52-year-old candidate, a mother of three grown children, will take on incumbent Athavia J. Senior in the May 24 nonpartisan election.

Jackson made her announcement in front of the Childcare Network on Hamilton Road in Columbus where she is the director.

“I have spent more than 20 years in early childhood care and education. I feel that with my experience, I have something to offer parents and students in this city. I want to enrich the lives of our children and feel that starts with having a good policy and plan,” said Jackson, a Columbus native with degrees from Hardaway High School and Columbus Technical College.

She said she would support giving additional funding to struggling elementary schools.

Jackson called herself a “people person” and is eager to heard from parents.

“I want success for our kids,” she said.

Jackson has served on the Columbus Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and worked with the Columbus Literacy Alliance.
