Fort Benning

Fort Benning won’t house Army leadership headquarters. Here is where it’s going.

Fort Benning will not serve as the Army’s next corps headquarters, the U.S. Army has announced.

The Army has chosen Kentucky’s Fort Knox as the site of its additional corps headquarters, called the Fifth (V) Corps.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports it’s the fourth corps headquarters activated by the Army, joining I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas, and XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The headquarters will have approximately 635 soldiers and about 200 of the soldiers stationed at the headquarters will rotate through an operational command post in Europe, the Army said.

Fort Benning and New York’s Fort Drum were also finalists for the designation.
