Fort Benning

It’ll be easier to watch the Best Ranger Competition as it expands to downtown Columbus

For the first time in its 39-year history, the Best Ranger Competition will expand beyond Fort Benning and conduct some of its events in downtown Columbus.

The Best Ranger Competition tests two-person Ranger teams in physical, mental, technical and tactical skills over 60 hours of events, such as weapons firing, marching and land navigation. All events are timed and scored. Both members of the two-person teams must complete each task to count in the competition.

The event will be held over four days, starting Friday, April 14.

Starting at 8:15 a.m., April 15, Day 2 of the four-day 2023 Best Ranger Competition, will be held at the Columbus Civic Center parking lot, 400 Fourth St.

Days 1 and 3 will start at Harmony Church Gate, 4180 Old Cusseta Highway, April 14 at 4:15 a.m. and April 16 at 7:30 a.m. The final day will start at the Main Gate, I-185, April 17 at 9:30 a.m.

Fort Benning has restricted entrance to the Army post, so visitors must register at the visitors center at either gate and bring a photo ID.

The Best Ranger Competition is one of four events the Maneuver Center of Excellence and the U.S. Army Infantry School is conducting during this year’s April 10-17 Infantry Week. The other three are:

  • International Sniper Competition, April 10-12 at Harmony Church Gate, and April 13, starting at 8:30 a.m., at the National Infantry Museum, 1775 Legacy Way.
  • Lacerda Cup, April 10-13, includes the combatives competition in eight weight classes for male and female soldiers at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center, 801 Front Ave., April 12, starting at 4:30 p.m.
  • Best Mortar Competition, April 10-11.
