The sixth annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday will be largest since the event started, said organizer Jerry “Pops” Barnes.
Barnes, a retired Army veteran Columbus councilor, said the parade will consist of 160 groups, vehicles and other displays. There groups from Phenix City, Smith Station, Columbus and Harris County.
Each year, the event has been held to honor area veterans. “It was something that should have happened way before now,” he said.
It starts at 10 a.m. on Colin Powell Parkway in Phenix City, moving north on Broad Street to 13th Street. After crossing east into Columbus on the bridge, the parade travels south on Broadway and ends at Ninth Street. Downtown streets will be blocked along the parade route until the event ends.
A tribute to veterans continues on Nov. 16 at the Columbus Civic Center with the Pops Barnes Free Second Annual Veterans Appreciation Concert.
The 6-8:30 p.m. event will feature Yolanda Sumbry, Men in Black, Praise Dance Team, Country Comedy, Kelvin Key, Fushia, Grande Beauty, Jessie Scott, Brooklyn Fisher, Marie Vedell, Angelo Ramon, and Pluto also known as Pavariottio. ----
