He was a Columbus community leader. Ex-Fort Benning schools superintendent dies
Rolla Baumgartner, a former superintendent of schools at Fort Benning who also was a community leader in Columbus, has died.
Baumgartner died May 8 in Niles, Michigan, according to his obituary. He was 89. His cause of death wasn’t available Thursday afternoon.
Although he died more than a month ago, his obituary was sent Thursday to the Ledger-Enquirer. No funeral arrangements have been announced.
Baumgartner was superintendent of schools at Fort Benning from 1983-94. That was part of his 27 years as a school administrator for the U.S. Department of Defense during a career that took him to military bases around the world.
While living in the Chattahoochee Valley, Baumgartner served for three years as board president for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. He also was a member of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra board and the Rotary Club of Columbus, and he graduated from Leadership Columbus, according to his obituary.
