Fort Benning wildfire continues to burn

A wildfire that started last week on Fort Benning continues to burn, according to a news release from post officials.

It started as the result of military training activities in an impact area near main post. It is contained within the firebreaks of the impact area.

Because of northern winds, the smoke did not impact main post. This week, the winds are shifting and coming from the south. It will likely impact populated areas in and around main post.

“The smoke will probably not affect areas outside the installation,” according to the release. “As the wildfire smoke moves further north and several miles away, it will dissipate into the atmosphere.”

Drivers are encourage to use caution during late evening and early morning hours this week and should anticipate smoke on roads and in low lying areas such as open fields and drainage areas, according to the release.

The most impacted roads are 1st Division Road, Lindsey Creek Parkway, and other roads on main post.
