No one needs to remind you that you have only so much time left to go beat someone up over a wide-screen TV at the big-box sale.

But don’t forget the other reason for the season: the solstice, the longest night of the year. After that, the days begin to lengthen, as if the sun is reborn.

That’s what led to pagan celebrations such as Saturnalia, the reason for which Christians later substituted the birth of Jesus.

Autumn 2017 will end at 11:28 a.m. EST Thursday, Dec. 21.

Time out

Speaking of changing times, here’s an email about a column on cell phones’ automatically shifting to Central Time when you drive to Phenix City, even though Phenix City is so on Eastern Time that its voter polls run on it. This apparently comes from Janice Turner:

Yeah, I too had the problem of time changing when I came home to Fort Mitchell from Columbus. However, I quickly learned how to set the clock on my phone to Eastern Time so it wouldn’t change. Wise up people!

Dear Janice:

I don’t think my old flip-phone does that. I’m not buying a new cell phone just to tell time. I like having one that’s not worth stealing.

Speaking of Alabama, here’s an email from its Republican U.S. Senate candidate, Roy Moore, who’ll be on the ballot with Democrat Doug Jones on Tuesday, when polls in Phenix City will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST, and others will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CST, which will be the same hours:
