‘Bloom County’ cartoonist lists 25-acre California ocean-view home. It’s worth a peek

The California ocean-view estate of Pulitzer Prize-winning “Bloom County” cartoonist Berkeley Breathed, with 25 acres of horse trails, deer meadows, fruit trees and oak groves, is on the market for $6.785 million.

An offer is pending for the Carpinteria property, which boasts 360-degree views from Santa Barbara’s harbor lights to Malibu’s mountains, according to the official property listing.

“Located within minutes to the villages of Montecito, Summerland, and Carpinteria, this estate provides the perfect refuge from the outside world,” according to the listing.

The modern Mediterranean-style main house spans 6,000 square feet with four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a large open-plan living room and dining room that features a fireplace and a Bali-style wood ceiling.

Moroccan and Egyptian lanterns, sconces, and fixtures are featured throughout.

“Lots of windows throughout the home take advantage of the scenery and bathe the contrasting crisp white walls and French Oak plank flooring in natural light,” writes toptenrealestatedeals.com, a real estate website.

Outside, there’s a stone terrace, solar-heated swimming pool and a grassy area that extends over the flat roof of the guesthouse, with a full kitchen, bedroom and private driveway.

The home is designed for creativity and entertaining.

“The artist’s personality shines through in the mansion’s gorgeous primary suite,” according to the toptenrealestatedeals.com article. “The main bedroom includes floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides and a custom marble and limestone floor. A lush home theater and office space with plush satin chairs, a projector, built-in cartoonist desk, Breathed’s original artwork hung on the walls, a built-in fireplace and an adorable built-in mouse house.”

Breathed, 55, won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1987 for “Bloom County.” He told the Los Angeles Times that he was selling the estate to be closer to his children’s school.

“I’d gotten quite used to working high above the Santa Barbara clouds in a Xanadu-like studio that appears designed for Captain Nemo,” Breathed told the Los Angeles Times. “Their particular school forced a painful decision to come back to downtown Earth.”

The Ebbin Group at Compass holds the listing.
