Chris Rock comedy tour gets second show in Atlanta while comedy albums soar post-Oscars
“High demand” for Chris Rock’s comedy tour has prompted an Atlanta, Georgia, venue to add a second show ahead of the comic’s visit to the Peach State this summer.
The comic’s albums are also seeing a boost after a fiasco that unfolded on stage at this year’s Oscars, which aired Sunday, March 27.
Fans who thought they missed a chance to see Rock, 57, live at The Fox Theatre on July 29 will have another chance to snag tickets for an 8 p.m. show on Saturday, July 30, the venue announced Wednesday, March 30. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on April 1.
Rock’s initial show quickly sold out after he was slapped on stage by award-winning actor Will Smith during the 94th annual Academy Awards. What’s been dubbed the “slap heard around the world” came after Rock poked fun at Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and her bald head.
Pinkett-Smith has been open about her struggle with alopecia, an auto-immune disease that causes hair loss.
Will Smith, who went on to win an Oscar for best actor for “King Richard,” has since apologized to Rock, and called his behavior “unacceptable and inexcusable.”
The incident has seemingly divided Americans, some of whom sided with Smith after what they saw as an effort to defend his wife. Others have sympathized with Rock, who took the slap and Smith’s subsequent profanity-filled rant in stride.
As of March 30, three of Rock’s albums soared into the Top 10 comedy albums on Apple Music. His 1997 album titled “Roll with the New,” landed at No. 11.
The Brooklyn native is set to kick off a 32-city comedy tour in Boston on March 30. Earlier this week, ticket marketplace TickPick tweeted that it had “sold more tickets to see Chris Rock overnight than we did in the past month combined.”
The comedian now has two shows scheduled in Atlanta before a performance in Funner, California, in late August, according to his tour schedule.
