19-year-old woman injured by stingray near Georgia’s Tybee Island, rescuers say
A 19-year-old woman was injured by a stingray in Wassaw Sound near Tybee Island, Georgia, according to rescuers.
The woman was taken to shore by medevac on Sunday, May 29, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
She was then “transferred to awaiting EMS at Bulls River Marina.” The Coast Guard did not provide information on the extent of her injuries.
Stingrays have venom in their tails that can be deadly, according to the online medical journal Merck Manual. Injuries usually occur when a swimmer steps on a stingray that is hiding in the sand.
About 1,500-2,000 stingray injuries are reported in the U.S. each year, according to the National Capital Poison Center.
