A 33-year-old man was struck by a minivan while chasing after a dog into oncoming traffic, Tennessee police say.  He later died of his injuries at the hospital.

A man who chased a dog onto a street died after being struck by a car, Tennessee police say.

The pedestrian, Gordon Gale Johnson, 33, “suddenly ran into the roadway” and into the path of a Honda minivan as he chased the dog on Aug. 22, Kingsport police said in a news release.

It is not immediately clear if the dog belonged to Johnson or why he was chasing it.

The car was driving lawfully, officials say, but couldn’t avoid the collision. The pedestrian was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. The driver was alone in the vehicle and was not injured.

Tennessee had the 12th-highest pedestrian fatality rate in the country in 2020, with 172 killed that year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Kingsport Police Department says the crash investigation is continuing.

Kingsport is about 100 miles northeast of Knoxville.
