A semi rear-ended a school bus slowing for an earlier accident on Interstate 40 near Sanders, killing a teen and injuring six others, Arizona officials told news outlets.

The fatal crash took place about 9:25 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, the Arizona Department of Public Safety told KPNX. The semi pushed the bus into a van.

A teen died and six others were seriously injured among the 19 people on the bus, AZ Family reported. It’s not known how many of the injured were also children.

Her family identified the 17-year-old killed in the wreck as Kiarra Alma Gordon, KSAZ reported.

“She had a beautiful soul,” her aunt. Falonna Ashley, told the station. “She was focused on education and was thinking about what to do after high school,”

The students were on a field trip to Window Rock from Holbrook Indian School, the school said on Facebook.

A rollover crash earlier in the morning had slowed traffic in the area, officials told KPNX.

The bus crash closed eastbound I-40, KNXV reported..

Sanders is a community of about 700 people about 240 miles northeast of Phoenix.
