Icy terrain strands hikers with dogs on mountain, California rescuers say

Two people stranded in icy terrain on Mount Baldy in California with their dogs required rescue by helicopter, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The hikers called 911 for help after sliding 20 feet trying to reach a trail in steep, icy terrain at about 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, a sheriff’s news release said.

A sheriff’s helicopter found the two Uplands residents, ages 34 and 35, and hoisted them to safety along with their two dogs, the release said.

Two rescuers first had to be lowered to the hikers, the release said. The rescuers used a rope system to lower the hikers and dogs to an area where the helicopter could hoist them up.

No injuries were reported. A sheriff’s air rescue helicopter assisted with the operation.

Mount Baldy, also known as Mount San Antonio, rises 10,064 feet between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties in the Angeles National Forest.
