A mom is accused of tossing her baby in a trash can, then fighting someone at a Walmart in Louisiana, police said.

Officers responded to a call about a fight involving multiple women at around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, according to the Eunice Police Department.

When officers reviewed the surveillance footage, they saw a group of people arguing near the entrance of the store, a news release said. One of the people was identified as a 38-year-old mom holding her 6-month-old baby in her arms, according to police.

Then the woman is seen on camera throwing her baby in a trash can before hitting another person, police said.

By the time police arrived, the fight had broken up, and authorities determined the infant wasn’t injured.

McClatchy News is not identifying the mother to protect her child’s identity.

The mom was charged with simple battery and cruelty to juveniles, and her 20-year-old niece accused of being involved in the fight is also charged with simple battery, police said.

McClatchy News could not find information about either of the women’s attorneys. The child was released to other family members, according to police.

Eunice is about an 80-mile drive west from Baton Rouge.
