A 5-year-old boy shot himself in the stomach when he discovered an unsecured gun in his home, Michigan prosecutors said.

He was rushed to a hospital Nov. 7, but he died from his injuries, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said in a Nov. 12 news release.

The child’s 32-year-old dad and 29-year-old mom of Westland are now facing charges because officials said the gun was not secured.

The two were arrested and charged with one count of firearm safe storage violations that inflected death, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The father is held on a $50,000 bond while the mother is held on a $25,000 bond, according to the news release. They are scheduled to appear in court Nov. 21.

Westland is about a 30-mile drive west from downtown Detroit.
