Pregnant mom of 3 killed when speeding driver causes her SUV to flip, MI cops say
A family is mourning the death of a mother of three and her unborn daughter after she was killed in a crash on a Michigan highway, deputies said.
Kaitlyn Ellison, 32, was driving home from work May 17 when a 24-year-old driving on the highway’s shoulder sideswiped the woman’s vehicle and ran her off the road, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and a GoFundMe.
Ellison’s Ford Escape flipped several times and landed in an embankment in Whiteford Township where she was trapped in the vehicle, deputies said. She was extricated from the SUV by fire officials, then taken to the hospital, authorities said in a May 18 news release.
The woman who was seven months pregnant was pronounced dead in the hospital, deputies said. Her unborn child also did not survive the crash.
The driver accused of fatally hitting Ellison while intoxicated fled the scene and was arrested at a gas station following a search, deputies said. Authorities said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
He is held in jail on two counts of second-degree homicide and two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, deputies said. The man was not named by authorities because he has not been arraigned.
Deputies said the crash remains under investigation.
Whiteford Township is about a 60-mile drive southwest from Detroit.
