Atlanta attorney will lead HUD Southeast operation

An Atlanta attorney, Denise Cleveland-Leggett, was named Wednesday as U.S. Housing and Urban Development Region IV administrator.

The appointment was made by HUD director Ben Carson.

According to the HUD press release, Cleveland-Leggett will work from the Atlanta Regional Office and lead the department’s Southeast Operation including, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Carson said he has known the new administrator for many years and has been “very impressed with her ability to get things done.”

An accomplished corporate lawyer, she represented various healthcare clients in transactional and regulatory matters including hospital accuisitions, hospital and physician contract negotiations and clinical integrations. She also assisted in resolving and defending matters regarding antitrust and employment law including cases of discrimination.

She has served on the Georgia Commission for Women, the Georgia State Ethics Commission and Council for the Hearing Impaired.

She was appointed board chair of Literacy Actions Inc. which seeks to remedy adult literacy.

She is a graduate of the Boston University School of Law.
