Muscogee Sheriff Tompkins concedes to Countryman as last of county’s votes are counted
Incumbent Sheriff Donna Tompkins on Facebook Wednesday afternoon conceded the democratic primary to Greg Countryman.
As of 4:06 p.m. Wednesday, Countryman led the race with 13,797 votes, or 54% of the vote.
All precincts have fully reported but results must be certified by the five-member county elections board to become official.
Tompkins secured 7,760 votes, or 30%, and challenger Pam Brown has 3,945 votes, or 16%.
Tompkins is currently serving her first term as sheriff, which ends in December.
“With almost all of the votes counted, Congratulations to Greg Countryman on being elected Sheriff,” Tompkins wrote in the post. “It has been my honor to serve the people of this community. I deeply appreciate all of those that supported me in this campaign with your vote, your prayers and your financial support. My prayers are for the healing of this community and the dedicated employees of the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office.”
Though Tompkins said Countryman has been elected sheriff, if certified the winner of Tuesday’s primary he will face off against Republican candidate Mark LaJoye in November.
