Live updates: Polls are closed. See results for Columbus & GA in November 2024 election

Now that the polls have closed, the 2024 election ballots are being counted and results are being reported in the Columbus area counties of Muscogee, Harris and Chattahoochee.
The most-watched race will be the presidential race, which is projected to be close with Georgia playing a major role.
Here are the latest results in the presidential race, according to the Associated Press:
U.S. House District 2 and District 3
The Columbus area also has two federal House races on the ballot.
In District 2, Sanford Bishop of Albany, a former attorney, is the incumbent and the Democratic nominee. He ran unopposed in the primary. Wayne Johnson, a Bibb County businessman, is the Republican nominee. Johnson defeated three opponents in the primary.

In District 3, no incumbent was on the ballot because Drew Ferguson, a Republican, decided to not seek re-election. Brian Jack, a Fayette County political adviser for former president Donald Trump, is the Republican nominee. Jack prevailed over five opponents in the primary. Maura Keller, a Fayette County nuclear medicine technologist, is the Democratic nominee. She defeated Val Almonord, a Muscogee County retired physician, in the primary.

Georgia state legislature elections
In Georgia House District 137, Debbie Buckner of Talbot County, a retired healthcare executive, is the incumbent and the Democratic nominee. She defeated Carlton Mahone Sr., a Talbot County a pastor, in the primary. Stephen Acorn of Muscogee County, a sales executive, is the Republican nominee. He ran unopposed in the primary.

The Georgia House District 139 seat was occupied by state Rep. Richard Smith, a Republican, who died from the flu Jan. 30 at age 78. Carmen Rice, a human resources professional in Columbus and former Muscogee County GOP chair, won the May 7 runoff over Sean Knox, president of Knox Pest Control in Columbus, to fill the remainder of Smith’s current two-year term through the end of 2024. Rice then defeated Knox and Donald Moeller, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Columbus, in the primary to be the Republican nominee.
She is competing in this election for the full two-year term, which will start in January, against Democratic nominee Carl Sprayberry, a Columbus chef. Sprayberry was unopposed in the primary.

In Georgia Senate District 29, Randy Robertson of Harris County, a retired law enforcement officer, is the incumbent and the Republican nominee. Ellen Wright, a retired resident of Meriwether County, is the Democratic nominee. Both ran unopposed in their primary.

Results for sheriff, district attorney, more
Muscogee County sheriff
In a sheriff’s office rematch, Democratic incumbent Greg Countryman faces Republican nominee Mark Lajoye. Countryman defeated Lajoye in the 2020 election, 50,812 votes to 27,765, to become Muscogee County’s first Black sheriff.
Countryman previously worked for the Columbus Housing Authority police and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office before becoming marshal in 2005.
Lajoye served for 40 years in the U.S. Army and for 13 years in the Columbus Police Department.

Chattahoochee district attorney’s race
In the contest for the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit district attorney, Don Kelly, the Republican nominee and current district attorney, faces Democratic nominee Anthony Johnson.
Kelly has worked in the district attorney’s office since 2003, including under the late Stacey Jackson. Kelly also has worked as a Superior Court law clerk and has run his own law firm.
Kelly was made acting district attorney by Jackson when Jackson stepped away from his role to deal with health issues. After Jackson’s death, Gov. Brian Kemp appointed Kelly to remain district attorney until this election.
Johnson is a U.S. Air Force veteran and local criminal defense attorney.

Muscogee County solicitor general
Suzanne Goddard, the Republican incumbent, faces Shevon Sutcliffe Thomas Sr., a Democrat.
The solicitor general in Muscogee County prosecutes criminal misdemeanor cases bound over from Recorder’s Court and Municipal Court.
