Second candidate announces campaign in Muscogee school board election
The second candidate — and first incumbent — has announced his campaign in the 2026 Muscogee County School District Board election.
Mark Cantrell, the board’s District 6 representative, posted the news Wednesday on his Facebook page.
As of Thursday morning, Cantrell hadn’t filed with the Muscogee County Board of Elections and Registration a declaration of intent to accept campaign contributions, according to the election board’s website.
Although no candidates for the May 19 nonpartisan election are official until the qualifying period during the first week of March, Cantrell already has an opponent.
The first candidate to announce a campaign for MCSD board’s 2026 election was Robert Roth, who filed his declaration Feb. 6 to run for the District 6 seat.
Roth was a candidate for the District 6 seat eight years ago, but he dropped out of the race after the ballots were printed and received 6% of the votes. Cantrell won the election with 56%, and Eddie Obleton received 38%.
The other incumbents in the nine-member board’s seats up for election this year — Nickie Tillery of District 2, Naomi Buckner of District 4, Margot Schley of District 8 and Kia Chambers of countywide District 9 — haven’t announced whether they will seek re-election.
